Staff News from TIRF

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) would like to congratulate TIRF research scientist, Ward Vanlaar who has received his Ph.D. in Transportation Sciences from Hasselt University in Belgium. Ward would like to acknowledge and thank his supervisor, Prof. Wets, and co-supervisor, Prof. Brijs, from Hasselt University, as well as the jurors who served on the reviewing committee including Prof. Shope, UMTRI, Dr. Hedlund, Highway Safety North, Prof. Karlis, Athens University of Economics and Business, Prof. Pauwels, Catholic University of Leuven and Prof. Hermans, Hasselt University. Congratulations Ward.  

TIRF is also pleased to welcome new research associate, Ms. Katie Wood. Katie joined us this past spring and has been engaged in a variety of young driver projects and other research efforts. Before joining TIRF, Katie worked as a Health Researcher at the Tampere School of Public Health in Tampere, Finland. She recently received her Master of Public Health from Indiana University and has experience in public health research and research promoting behavioural changes.  

TIRF would also like to announce the promotion of staff members Kyla Marcoux and Erin Holmes.  Kyla and Erin joined TIRF in the spring of 2008 and were promoted to research associates in August 2009 as a result of their growing skills in road safety research and their contribution to a variety of road safety initiatives.  

Kyla and Erin have been working at the organization while completing their studies. Kyla is completing her Masters Degree in Criminology at the University of Ottawa and is a teaching assistant for quantitative methods at the University. Erin has recently begun her Masters Degree in Criminology. Erin also chairs a volunteer organization that acts as a support network and community liaison for marginalized individuals. Congratulations to Katie, Kyla and Erin.  

After eleven months with the organization, Dr. Brian Jonah is departing TIRF to follow other pursuits. His contribution to the organization is appreciated and TIRF wishes him well in his future endeavours.

TIRF, a national registered charity, has been a driving force in traffic safety for over 40 years. Its mission is to reduce deaths and injuries from road crashes through prevention measures and policies based on sound research.
