Alcohol Interlock Curriculum for Practitioners Technical Assistance

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) created an Alcohol Interlock Curriculum for Practitioners (AIC) with funding provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp. (ACS), Smart Start Inc., and Dräger Safety.  The AIC was designed to meet the needs of transportation, criminal justice and health professionals who are often implicated in the delivery of alcohol interlock programs. The curriculum provides these professionals with access to the latest research and information, and makes available a wide range of “train the trainer” tools and resources. Modules contained in the curriculum include: research, technology, certification, certification, implementation, jurisdictional reciprocity, legal concerns, and vendor oversight. A new module on program evaluation will soon be made available.

The curriculum is accessed via the web at www.aic.tirf.ca by alcohol interlock program administrators, court personnel, criminal justice practitioners, treatment professionals and driver licensing agencies.

In conjunction with the curriculum, TIRF also offers technical assistance to jurisdictions to help strengthen the delivery of alcohol interlock programs. This service is made possible through a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and assistance has been delivered in more than 30 U.S. jurisdictions since 2008. Technical assistance includes the comprehensive review of program documents, key informant interviews with experienced professionals, an in-person workshop involving experts, and potential training opportunities. Information gathered from this process is synthesized and shared with the state to inform decision-making and help identify opportunities to strengthen practices.
