Title Youth and Road Crashes: A Program of Research and Prevention
Start Date May 2008
End Date December 2013
Sponsor Toyota Canada
Description Youth and Road Crashes: Magnitude, Characteristics and Trends: A contemporary study of the magnitude, characteristics and trends in the problem of road crashes involving young adults in Canada. The study will seek to identify key age-related and experience-related factors (e.g., driving skills, hazard perception, risk taking, alcohol and drug use, seat belt use, etc.) that render young drivers at such high risk of collision, death and injury.

Safety Programs for Young Drivers. A nationwide inventory of youth-oriented road safety programs will document the state-of-the-art of prevention initiatives in Canada. Visit the Young and New Driver Resource Centre to access the inventory.

As a result of additional funding received in 2011, new materials will soon be available through the site in electronic and printed formats. These materials will be designed to help young drivers and their parents increase their knowledge of how young drivers are affected by a variety of road safety issues including fatigue, distraction, impairment, speeding, seatbelt use, as well as strategies to mitigate these risks.

Road Safety Monitor Focus on Youth. Our Road Safety Monitor, an annual public opinion poll, will probe the issue of youth and road crashes beginning in 2004, to gain insights into public knowledge and concern about the problem of road crashes, to obtain information from youth about their perceptions of safety and their driving practices, and to assess changes in these factors over time.
