Title	Evaluation of Alberta Motor Association's remedial programs for impaired drivers

Description	TIRF has been contracted to conduct a process evaluation of the Alberta Motor Association’s two impaired driving programs for convicted drunk drivers - IMPACT and Planning Ahead.   The IMPACT program is a weekend residential program targeted toward and completed by a majority of convicted repeat offenders in Alberta. The program consists of an assessment that involves a number of psychometric instruments. Core components of this program include: lectures in the form of large group discussion and small group discussions, individual interviews and videos. The program has undergone many updates in recent years making this evaluation timely. The Planning Ahead program is offered in 21 towns and cities across Alberta and is targeted towards and completed by a majority of first offenders. The program consists of a brief intervention that incorporates an assessment instrument. Core components of this program include: course introduction, a session on impaired driving laws, and a session on the impact of alcohol on the human body and how its impairing properties relate to driving. It also refers to the impairing qualities of certain drugs. There are also sessions on lifestyle awareness and the development of a personalized action plan. As with the IMPACT program, the Planning Ahead program has large and small group discussions and a video. Specific goals of the process evaluations are to examine program participation rates; stakeholders’ perceptions of the programs; the effectiveness of program operations; and to identify potential improvements to the programs among other tasks.
