Cell phones and young drivers: A systematic review regarding the association between psychological factors and prevention

This literature review examined factors that influence young drivers to engage in cell phone use while driving. Topics that were considered included:

  • the frequency of cell phone use among young drivers;
  • the perceived risk associated with cell phone use while driving;
  • psychological influences on cell phone use while driving;
  • perceived versus actual control while using a cell phone while driving,
  • the effect of law enforcement on cell phone use while driving; and,
  • the effect of intervention on cell phone use while driving.

Results from this review indicated that there is a high frequency of cell phone use while driving, as well as texting while driving, despite there being a high perceived risk associated with both behaviours. Overall, young drivers were identified as an at-risk group for distracted driving. Authors concluded that study results can provide a basis for prevention campaigns and address the influences associated with distracted driving to effectively prevent drivers from using cell phones while driving.
