This literature review examined factors that influence young drivers to engage in cell phone use while driving. Topics that were considered included:
- the frequency of cell phone use among young drivers;
- the perceived risk associated with cell phone use while driving;
- psychological influences on cell phone use while driving;
- perceived versus actual control while using a cell phone while driving,
- the effect of law enforcement on cell phone use while driving; and,
- the effect of intervention on cell phone use while driving.
Results from this review indicated that there is a high frequency of cell phone use while driving, as well as texting while driving, despite there being a high perceived risk associated with both behaviours. Overall, young drivers were identified as an at-risk group for distracted driving. Authors concluded that study results can provide a basis for prevention campaigns and address the influences associated with distracted driving to effectively prevent drivers from using cell phones while driving.
