TIRF undertakes approximately 30 projects each year focused on behaviours that create risk on the road and which play a role in the majority of road crashes.

Our projects aim to measure the prevalence of risk-taking and characteristics of these road users to increase understanding of specific problems.

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) undertook a research project to understand the effectiveness of posted speed limit reductions in partnership with SMATS Traffic Solutions. This project was funded through Transport Canada’s Enhanced Road Safety Transfer Payment Program (ERSTPP).

TIRF, in partnership with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), conducted a study investigating the divergence in traffic fatality trends between Canada and the United States from 2007 to 2021. While traffic fatalities in the U.S. began increasing after 2011, Canada maintained a declining trend.

July 15, 2025

The Canadian Automobile Association commissioned TIRF to conduct a study of Canadian and international research about road safety risks associated with e-bikes and e-scooters. It also examines current approaches to regulating their use. The findings provide much-needed guidance to inform policy discussions at all levels of government.

TIRF’s Youth Advisor Program (TIRF YAP) is designed to tap into and share the views, experiences and attitudes of young road users. Input from youth helps TIRF integrate their perspectives in research projects and guides educational strategies. A key focus of YAP is to communicate risks in ways that are relatable and engaging for young audiences.

TIRF was commissioned on behalf of the Government of Belize by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment to undertake a post-project Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) survey along the Philip S. W. Goldson Highway between Belize City and the Mexico border.
