Canada’s Impaired Driving Landscape | New Data, Community Insights & Emerging Solutions

The Dec. 16, 2025 webinar recording is accessible through TIRF’s YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/kJTLspiRrEA?si=bZ0g94AdH6Dq6c2i

Brought to you by:

The impaired driving landscape in Canada has changed. Lingering pandemic-related effects on behaviour, substantial changes in impaired driving legislation and changing practices in the criminal justice system have all played a role in this evolution. The general and specific deterrent effects accrued with traditional countermeasures such as education, enforcement and penalties are no longer enough to discourage unsafe choices. This is, in part, because the characteristics of impaired drivers have changed along with a shift in economic priorities, emerging social issues, and implementation challenges associated with new policing tools.

Join us for a comprehensive look at impaired driving which will include the latest impaired driving fatality data and self-reported prevalence among Canadians. Findings from a series of regional community workshops held in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec will be shared, highlighting important contextual changes and practical barriers that communities are facing in delivering prevention strategies. A series of innovative tools coming out of these workshops will showcase how communities are working to fill critical gaps and adopt new approaches to tackle this road safety priority. These community perspectives have informed the development new tools which can support the efforts of communities across Canada and provide guidance to help shape provincial strategies.
